So you’ve aced the ABCs of Cannabinoids. You know how to dose. Now we’re leveling up with a primer on terpenes, the cherry on top when it comes to your cannabis experience.
Like cannabinoids, more than 100 different terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant. While there is still a lot more research to uncover, studies show terpenes work with cannabinoids to alter or enhance the effects you feel. This is also known as the Entourage Effect.
Luckily, unlike having to just memorize the effects of specific cannabinoids, your nose can help guide you through the therapeutic effects of terpenes. That’s because terpenes are the fragrant oils that give cannabis (and other natural flowers, fruits, and vegetables) their aromatic and flavor qualities. The terpene limonene, for example, smells like citrus and is found in citrus fruits. Pinene smells like—you guessed it—pine and is found in pine needles. You know how you’re able to associate the scent of lavender with calm and relaxation? That is due to the terpene linalool. Fun fact: Linalool happens to be naturally present in more calming cannabis strains.
Moral of the story: Understanding terpenes––their aromatic qualities and the associated therapeutic effects––is a helpful way to better predict the experience you will have with specific cannabis products.
