In the cannabis community, connection is everything. Whether it comes from socializing with others or a well-deserved, independent self-care ritual, your experience with cannabis is meant to strengthen a bond. We were immediately captivated by Hood Flowers and their engaging human-centric stories about candid, real-life cannabis experiences. As a creative team whose video stories are dedicated to changing the perspective, Hood Flowers has created original, informative, and flat-out fun pieces, such as a first experience with edibles, or a blind blunt rolling competition. But it’s their Flower Talk series that exposes some truths that we needed to share. As we have all intimately experienced, shedding the stigma, especially among cannabis skeptics, isn’t a tough challenge to overcome. Watch how Hood Flowers’ slashes the cannabis stigma with their creative approach.
In this video you’ll meet Jevita, who shares her experience going from a casual social smoker in high school with a mother who was against cannabis to being a regular cannabis user and mother herself. She is high functioning and excited to educate her daughter about the real experience from her own history. It’s a story we can relate to and wish we heard more of before we discovered the plant. True conversations like these need to be had among ourselves, too, in order to change common perceptions.
We sat down with Hood Flowers’ Founder Che Nichols to hear her story and learn why she’s so passionate about fighting the “reefer madness” depictions of our past to change our future’s mindset on the plant.
What was the inspiration behind Hood Flowers?
Hood Flowers came about after the passing of my mama. She suffered from epilepsy and once I was made aware of cannabis and its aid to epileptic patients, I was determined to get my mama to try it as an alternative. Unfortunately, nothing worked in convincing her to go green. I strongly believe this was because of what she associated cannabis with and what she was taught about it. After her passing, I began thinking of ways I could help change the perspective of what it means to use cannabis and the spaces in which it can exist
What do you want viewers to take with them from the video?
We’d love for viewers to understand that education is key! This particular video was fun and interesting to create because, with youth and even in some adult spaces, there is always hesitation to have difficult, complex conversations. We strongly believe that the sooner youth are educated on cannabis, the better they understand it, and are able to make informed decisions about using it or not. This all starts with the parents!
