Ask HiVi: Can I build a tolerance to CBD?

This one was an interesting one to tackle. We’re assuming this is derivative of the common question out there about users building a tolerance for THC. It’s only logical you question whether you can build a tolerance for CBD as well. But, like most CBD questions, the answer to your question isn’t clear cut.

So, let’s start backwards.

Yes, there is such a thing as THC tolerance. Studies show THC users can build up a tolerance over long-term and consistent THC use. This is because of the way THC binds directly to the body’s endocannabinoid receptors in the brain. These receptors in your endocannabinoid system control the body’s immune system, nervous system and mood. This is why you can feel mind-altering effects when you consume THC. Studies show that chronic THC users may lose cannabinoid receptors over time. Therefore, they need to consume stronger doses of THC to get the same result.

By contrast, CBD binds differently and can bind with cannabinoid receptors throughout the body vs specifically in the brain. Additionally, CBD promotes increased receptor activity. Therefore, some people report that over a few months oof consistent CBD use, they discover they don’t need to take the same amount to feel the same effects they were feeling. This is called reverse tolerance.

What the heck is reverse tolerance?

Reverse tolerance means you need less of a substance to get to the same result you were experiencing prior. In essence, you can take a smaller dose to feel the same effects. In some cases, your tolerance can slowly continue to decline.

So how do I know how much CBD to take?

This is wholly dependent on you. Everybody is different based on a number of factors. It could be your gender, your age, your weight, stress levels, other physical and mental conditions, the time of the month, the list goes on. Figuring out the correct dosage requires proper guidance and education, along with an open mind and some experimentation. We can help you get started with our general dosing guide. From there, you can slowly start to understand your body’s responses and make an informed decision that’s right for you.

Get your CBD foundation down and strong. And be patient as you enjoy the journey of discovery. You will get to that sweet spot in no time.
