6 Black women-owned CBD brands to support

Here are 6 Black women-owned CBD brands to support.

Why?

While the legal U.S. cannabis industry is projected to be a whopping $80 billion by 2030, this heavily discriminatory industry still targets Black communities. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) states that a Black person is 3.64 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than a white person even though Black and white people use cannabis at similar rates. Furthermore, Black-owned cannabis businesses take up less than 5% of the industry.

It’s extremely important that we encourage and support an inclusive and equitable cannabis future, one that reflects the universal healing properties of the plant. Cannabis should be safely accessible to all, both inside and outside of the industry.

So let’s begin.

Malaika Jones Kebede, Nia Jones Alugbin

BROWN GIRL jane

A trifecta of professionals, including former financial trading executive Malaika Jones Kebede, her sister Nia Jones Alugbin, and beauty expert Tai Beauchamp, founded BROWN GIRL jane.  Beauchamp’s experience exploring holistic healing over pharmaceutical drugs for an injury inspired the idea for this now unmistakeable brand. BROWN GIRL jane’s CBD products are organically grown, plant-based vegan, and cruelty-free. With a sumptuous collection of serums, body butters, tinctures and oils, this brand champions self-love and wellness in a way we can really connect with.

We love: Yoni oil

Kimberly Dillon

FRIGG

FRIGG, rightfully named after the Norse goddess of intuition and wisdom, stands out and emanates energy and strength. Cannabis industry veteran and consultant Kimberly Dillon created this collection of hair and skin saviors this year, a perfect time to spotlight the importance of mental well-being amidst very stressful times. According to Dillon, stress can impact us internally and externally, even if it’s disguised as dry skin, insomnia, or an itchy scalp. Frigg’s product line and messaging soothe the stress away with clean and clinically proven plant ingredients.

We love: Attuning Hair Potion

Rebecca Grammer-Ybarra

HOMEBODY

If you haven’t noticed by now, we are all-in when it comes to a nice bath in our self-care ritual. It is essential. Therefore, we were so excited to discover Homebody’s line of dreamy CBD soaks by Founder Rebecca Grammer-Ybarra. With very little Black representation in CBD, Rebecca was initially hesitant about “coming out” as a Black founder in the industry. This just underscores the importance and need for us to support and build these companies up. We are so thrilled to see Grammer-Ybarra embrace her talent and identity. Her ENTIRE line is currently sold out, but we are keeping a close eye out for the moment they’re restocked!

We love: Full Spectrum Of Possibilities soak

Undefined Beauty

As a seasoned professional from the beauty space, with positions at Kendo Brands, Sundial and Covergirl, Founder Dorian Morris’ bold move to start her own CBD-infused clean beauty skincare company, Undefined Beauty, was a natural progression. The Glow Elixir, a multi-purpose beauty oil with 16 different botanicals including rosehip, jojoba, argan, moringa, squalane, grape seed, and camellia is a powerhouse item that is free of silicones, parabens, preservatives, artificial colors, and fragrances. As a steadfast champion for social justice and equity, her brand is poised to empower the underrepresented community as well and her retail arm, Undefined Collective exclusively supports female-founded, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ indie brands.

Shanel Lindsey

Ardent

Okay, Ardent isn’t technically a CBD brand, but it is the best piece of canna-tech out there. Home chefs can explore the world of decarboxylation (fancy word for extracting the CBD or THC out of cannabis flower) and infuse it into their favorite recipes. Founder Shanel Lindsey is a powerhouse. Also a lawyer, Shanel bootstrapped the company and built it from the ground up in 2016 and went from losing $50,000 its first to earning more than $3.3 million in sales last year.  Lovingly nicknamed the “Easy Bake oven” of cannabis, the Arden FX is designed for personal use. You can activate, infuse, melt, and bake all in one. Now how’s that for techie convenience!

We love: Ardent FX

Tess Taylor

TAYLOR + tess

Harkening back to her Black ancestors for natural and healing ingredients, Founder Tess Taylor celebrates her history and manifests it through the fully plant-based and toxic-free beauty line TAYLOR + tess. The “In The Buff” cleansing bar features African Black soap and “the Quickie” facial toning spray features Kakadu plum for brightening. She fully promotes diversity. Furthermoore, she champions education, de-stigmatization and social and economic change. She even trademarked the company’s slogan, “for women, men, neither and both.” You’ll find that her simple yet beautiful three-piece facial set nourishes your skin and your spirit in the process.
